The United Nations defined sustainable development in the Brundtland Report as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It assumes that resources are finite and must therefore be used conservatively and responsibly to ensure their availability for future generations.

All economic activities that use resources generate an impact. This impact can be direct (resulting from the company's activity) or indirect (through relationships with suppliers). The impact may be positive or negative, expressed economically, socially, or environmentally. For most companies, measuring the impact generated along their supply chain is a key element in transitioning to sustainability.

According to new proposals by the European Commission, companies will be required to identify, prevent, mitigate, or reduce their negative impacts across the entire value chain. This includes addressing issues related to human rights (e.g., labour exploitation, child labour) and the natural environment (e.g., pollution, biodiversity loss). Therefore, the question arises: How do you build a sustainable value chain to comply with the forthcoming legislation and protect the future of upcoming generations?

In this edition of Sustainability School, we explored this topic with Adina Tudor, Customer Sustainability Partnerships Manager at Coca-Cola HBC Romania, and Adina Feclist, Continuous Improvement and Sustainability Leader at Schneider Electric Romania. Together, we uncovered best practices and ways companies can be both profitable and sustainable.
